Disruptive Behaviors in Healthcare Settings
Disruptive behavior is common in healthcare settings by both nurses and physicians. We have often heard of the phrase "Nurses eating their young". Nurses are most commonly victims of disruptive behaviors by physicians who may be intolerant, overworked, and stressed. JCAHO has created a new leadership standard (LD.03.01.01) that addresses this behavior. Healthcare facilities must have in place a code of conduct that defines acceptable, disruptive and inapproriate behaviors. Leaders must creat and implement a process for managing disruptive and inappropriate behavior. Do you think that disruptive behavior could potentially have a negative impact on patient outcomes? Has anyone ever had an adverse event as a result of disruptive behavior?
